I see myself on
that oldest day
high on a cliff
somewhere, its brow swept
back with grass,
looking out to sea,
still lonely, and reaching
high high up
for the nets of angels
to haul me into
heaven.I see myself an
iron-hard old woman,
having foaled my share
and spent my gift for
singing to them,
and gone on.
Deep Thought: “The king threw back his head and laughed. He enjoyed a good laugh, and so did his wife, the queen. When she saw the king laughing she let out a big laugh too. In fact, she laughed so hard she broke her throne. This made them both laugh harder. Then they got serious when they remembered they had the plague. “The plague,” said the king, but the way he said it made them both burst out laughing again.”

Oh how you make me smile and think…
That poem is beautiful. It’s making me cry.
Okay, here goes, Alice in Wonderland? I don’t read much poetry, but this one really touched me. It says it all. ~lea
Oops. Not the movie. Lol.
Alice in Wonderland is actually not a bad guess for the movie. Think another voyage.
The Wizard of Oz!!
Bingo!
Wonderful poetic imagery. Sad, but beautiful.
I love the poem. I find it strong and see myself there too someday. If I could be by a sea and some grass in the final hours then how far away could heaven be?
great poem!
still
lonely
powerfully unifying.
Thank You
love the poem. what a gift!
The ”Rosie and Michael” poem you mentioned on CLOG’s site has resurfaced so many times in my life since I read Viorst’s book, and usually around the time a specific friendship is under scrutiny. Thanks for jogging my memory at an appropriate time!
Deep Thought reminds me of Masque of the Red Death.
Iam beginning to get comfortable with getting older and somehowthis poem echoes that..it also an image gift…as is the actual picture here….RYC I am sorry that your friend has this challenge..
I was uncomfortable with the poem; wonder if that means I’m not aging very gracefully? Maybe so…
I knew that movie sounded familiar!
“having foaled my share”
Very nice line.
Ok, you absolutely HAVE to tell me where you get these Deep Thoughts. You have no choice, comerade.

The poem is nice. “an iron-hard old woman”, hmmmmm.
I bet there is still some softness underneath the iron.
Lovely….but sad.
I myself am knee deep in it. I remember most of those Oz speeches. Wonder why this one fooled me. I think it was the disorganized thinking part.
embarrassed to say, but i’ve never seen the wizard of oz. something about technicolor scares me.
Love that poem. Also, love the Wizard of Oz! What makes the hot in the hot-in-tot so hot? What puts the ape in the apricot? What do they got that I ain’t got? Courage. You can say that again.
really enjoy the blogs. thanks for the poem. you inspire thought and creative expression.
Methinks you’ve NOT spent your entire gift.
Oh, Sierra!
