  • TUESDAY POLITICS

    Wag the Dog

Who is this guy, Paul Krugman of the New York Times, who every time I turn around is being quoted and linked to around here by the political xangans. Well, I looked him up and when I saw his photo realized I’ve seen him occasionally being harassed by types like Bill O’Reilly on the rightwing TV media. Today his op-ed piece in the Times is called Wag the Dog Protection (click here). The gist of it is (in case you’re sailing through on Fast Xanga speed) that we can expect to see the Bush gang switch to another national security freakout push soon to divert attention from the generally crappy response to their Social Security privatization plans. Let’s all watch and see.

Deep Thought: “If there was a big gardening convention, and you got up and gave a speech in favor of fast-motion gardening, I bet you would get booed right off the stage. They’re just not ready.”
    Today I am grateful for:  Fast-thinking co-workers
Guess the Movie: “I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more to life than being really, really good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is.” Answer: Zoolander, 2001. Winner: merrow_mistral.
Bush Goes From Alarmist To Pollyanna With Ease
    by Harley Sorensen

In 1978, when he was running for the House of Representatives, George Bush told a reporter that Social Security would go broke within 10 years. He was wrong. It went “broke” in four years. (Rest of article here.)
    End of Day: 8:50 pm
+ = Plumbing done thank god.
    - = Now I have to take on the water bureau.

  • Krugman is the man. He’s a real, super respected economist who knows the numbers and what they mean, and virtually everything he’s written in The Times over the past few years (on the economy, on Iraq, on 9/11) has been proven true. He’s the best the Times has. And notice. Not one terror alert since the election, though had they been worried about Gonzales I bet we would have gotten one.

  • Correctamundo!

  • will be watching, thanks for the tip.

  • Nothing the Bush administration does surprises me anymore…

  • Thanks for the visit and comment. I am going to have to digest your site because there is so much of interest here, but I have to have more time to do it. I will be back. I like your rules of thumb…they make lots of sense to me.

  • Thanks for the visit.  I really like your earth symbol.  I will be back to read and comment soon.  Cyn

  • I’ll keep an eye out for Wag the Dog…

  • When I bought that house in Lake Oswego I never got a water bill.  The neighbors said that was typical that they lost a bunch of customer records.  It happened to my next-door neighbor, too.  Then when the bureau found them they were able to pay $100 a month until they got caught up.  Well, when I got mine it was way too much and it continued to be sky high.  Right before they backed down I owed them $4,000 and I’d only lived there three years.  They made it right but, man, for a while I was frantic.

  • I am so non-politically involved it’s probably pathetic.

  • I agree totally with THE NARRATOR in his description of Mr. Krugman…unfortunately, the mutant armies of America have neither the wisdom nor vision to take heed of his words…and the beat goes on.

  • Now that you mention it his stuff is often in tompaine.com including Wag the Dog.  Don’t you think  people are going to catch on soon?  Much of America is simply too lazy to pay too much attention to politics and they fall for the manipulative stuff but it’s getting so obvious.

  • I think your right, the dog is about to be wagged. I think Bush announced his newest “crusade” in Germany. He has decided that Iran is now a problem and that the absolutely can’t have nuclear weapons. Now, personally I think that no one should have nuclear weapons, but how did he become selected to determine who should have them? They probably want them to prevent the  US from invading them…  I don’t even wish to speculate on what will follow from this newest identification of the “enemy”.

Wag the Dog was one great movie…

  • Krugman has done a good job of keeping track of what Bush and his fellow neocons are up to.

  • Ironically, I had thought of posting this at my site too! Very interesting-wish we had MORE Paul Krugmans around. Thanks to Narrator too, for having the link to the paper, I subscribed and have found it very newsworthy.
    Thanks Lionne!
