    ARRESTED IN NEW YORK CITY!

Sorry we haven’t been up-to-date with our up-dates, but thanks to George
Bush and Mayor Bloomberg, we’ve been in jail!

Here’s what happened:  We’d joined a march organized by War Resisters
League, Schools of the Americas, Pax Christi, Veterans for Peace and others.
The event was framed with this statement:

Our aim is to confront the administration with the death and suffering for
which they are responsible:  more than 10,000 Iraiqs and Afghanis, as many
as 1,000 Americans killed, thousands more wounded and scarred for life, as
well as the economic victims of Bush policies – the unemployed, the
uninsured, the undereducated.  The Republicans have chosen to hold their
convention in New York City to link George Bush and “Ground Zero”.  Bush’s
policies have created “ground zeros” of death and suffering throughout the
world and we hold him accountable for that.”

Organizers asked people to gather at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Church and Fulton
Streets (just in front of Ground Zero).  The plan was to march from Ground
Zero up Broadway to Union Square and finally to Madison Square Garden where
a “die-in” would be dramatized to honor the fallen.

We arrived early to distribute Progressive Democrats of America fliers to
the crowd as they gathered.  An estimated 1-2,000 people had assembled.
After a brief negotiation between organizers and police,  a police officer
clearly in charge of the event (whose badge read “Shea”) announced to the
marchers over a megaphone that the march could begin.  He cautioned marchers
    to:

    Obey all traffic lights
    Walk 2 X 2
Stay close to the fence and keep the sidewalk clear

As we were told to do,  we waited for the traffic light to change before
crossing Church Street to begin marching East on Fulton.  As we began to
walk along the south side of St. Pauls’s Church, we walked 2 X 2 and stayed
as close to St. Paul’s wrought iron fence as we could.   When 100-200 had
moved onto Fulton Street sidewalk, the march was halted by police at the
front forcing marchers to spill into the whole sidewalk.  The police (who
numbered almost as many as the protesters) immediately closed off and
circled the marchers contained on the sidewalk.  We couldn’t move.  We
couldn’t back up or leave.  We heard no warning and were not allowed
disperse.  We were enclosed by an orange net fencing and were told that we
    were being arrested.

At about 4:15 p.m., police began rounding us up, handcuffing us and putting
us onto to buses to be taken away.  We then began being told that we were
    not “arrested” but merely “detained”.

What followed was a 24-hour ordeal of being moved from a temporary holding
facility and eventually to central booking.  We were continuously moved from
cell to cell – chained to each other in chain-gang fashion.  Conditions were
deplorable.  The cells were overcrowded and filthy and the food was not
    edible.

As more and more people were brought into jail, we learned that similar
sweeps had taken place across Manhattan.  People were picked up at Union
Square, Times Square, Madison Square Garden, the Library, and various other
locations.  It was a planned sweep to interrupt and shut down growing
nonviolent protests to the Republican National Convention.

Such is the “America” that George Bush has brought us to.

We do want to acknowledge that the rank and file police were overwhelmingly
in support of us but seem to feel forced to satisfy the top brass to keep
their jobs and feed their families.  During our incarceration, we heard
    these comments from police:

One police officer looked us in the eye and sadly said,  “I’m so sorry.”
Another said:  “You don’t think that any of us want to be doing this, do
    you?”
Another officer told us during the wee hours of the morning, that “We’re
doing this to keep the rich Republicans happy.”
Another officer reminded us that:  “When you’re feeling down and
discouraged, remember why you’re here and what you came to do.”
And my favorite story.  When a young 17-year-old woman began to cry as she
was being fingerprinted, the officer finger printing her gently said to her:
“Remember your cause and keep your mind on why you came here and on what you
came to do.  Remember all of those people who came before you and did just
what you did tonight for something they believed in”.

But the issue is much bigger than whether or not the police were with us or
against us. whether you’re a Republican, a Democrat, an Independent, a
Libertarian or a Green. whether you’re pro-Israel or pro-Palestine. whether
    you’re pro-life or pro-choice. whether you’re progressive or conservative.
These are all diversionary divisive issues that are taking our focus from
    the real threat.

The real threat is to the very survival of our Democracy and our right to
free speech and to dissent granted to us through the First Amendment to the
    Constitution!

If we don’t wake up soon, people, it will be too late!  Our Democracy is
under siege and we must all have the courage to take a stand in its defense.

As one of our favorite sayings goes… “If you’re not yet outraged, you’re
    not paying attention!”

We’ll report tomorrow on actions and events going on in the city.  Plans
were being made for a massive assembly around Madison Square Garden on the
night that Bush accepts the nomination.  We’ll see if the current Republican
Party power base is able to shut it down.

  • The absolute willingness of Bush, Bloomberg, and Police Commissioner Kelly (who I worked for back when he was a Captain) to violate basic civil rights is extraordinary. The use of the NYPD to suppress civil liberties was something I’d hoped we’d left behind with Benito Giuliani. But alas. Please consider having a lawyer file a civil rights suit against Bloomberg and Kelly. Everyone (from what I understand about the march you are discussing) has a fully legitimate case.

  • I guess I’m not surprised by this, the republicans sure don’t want people to think about how many Americans totally disagree with Bush. It is unfortunate though to see more proof that as Americans we only have rights up to the point where our rights inter fear with the goals of the rich and powerful.

  • Time to call the ACLU.

  • Good fuckin grief!!!!!  I am continually amazed and outraged.  And further amazed and outraged that soooo many seem to not notice this.  Thanks for posting this.

  • thanks lionne, for sharing your story, I hope you don’t mind that I posted a link at my site..

  • It doesn’t surprise me in the least.

  • Wow! Really? Amazing.
What can I say; Canajun, eh. But Maclean’s Magazine ran this photo this week. God bless all who marched.

Anyway, WriteThis can be found at http://www.theprint.dk/writethis.html –a google  search will track it down fast.

  • Just to be clear.  It’s not my story.  I copied from a forum.  It’s the story of the Bohlens.

  • amazing…. it’s getting crazier.

  • poor baby

  • Sheesh .  Thanks for posting this!

  • I posted a link on my site to this post. I find this incredibley disturbing.

  • This gave me chills   I’m not even American, but Bush’s policies are radiating out and affecting the rest of the world ~ even the so called ‘allied’ countries.  I’m looking forward to the English elections so we can let Blair know we disapprove of his sycophantic following of that administration’s behaviour

    Thanks for posting this

  • amazing story…

  • Somehow I’m seeing a civil suit on the City of NY over this. How incredible.

  • Keep fighting.

  • I am so thrilled to read the truth.  Thanks so much for posting this.

  • That’s out-of-control! Doesn’t surprise me at all! I’m just guessing that nothing like that happened at the democratic convention. Bush is really trying to hide the fact that there are alot of people out there who aren’t fooled by him; and are willing to stand up and defend their rights.

  • My only comment is on this line: The cells were overcrowded and filthy and the food was not
    edible.

I’m sorry, but should prison/jail cells be luxury hotel suites or what?

  • Oh New york City is already in trouble for the denention. A judge made a ruling against the city. Citing that due process of the law was not follow through. I didn’t catch the whole story

On the news on tues, they were interviewing this one woman who was being arrest, well she was just passing through and was not apart of it. Oh do smell lawsuits coming. Yup!!

  • How nicely this dovetails with my reading of Hitler’s biography.

  • That is deplorable.

  • while i think that that is not right, i just want to play devil’s advocate here and mention that the Repblicans aren’t the only ones silencing free speech. At the DNC in boston, the majority of protesters of the convention voiced their opinions from behind barbed wire fences. in the words of my girlfriend, who worked at the convention, they cuold be heard, but not seen – in other words, the delegates didn’t have to stoop to actually facing their accusers. Does this necessarily excuse police behavior in NY? no, but in my opinion, it merely proves that neither party seems to be terribly honest about defending civil liberties.

  • so bush is making the nypd be a little tight about protesting.. hes sitting there pointing his finger at the cops saying.. don’t let them protest.. get real people

  • Wow, thank you for this post.

  • Free country, my arse! *snort*

  • How can a lot of rich politicians understand how poor people feel? They should put a poor man in power, that’ll screw the lot of them.

  • First the Christians lose their rights to pray in school, to wear clothing that depicted their Saviour or his word. To publicly pray no matter where they are. To display the symbols that proclaimed their faith.

Then the dissenters rights are trampled, falsely imprisoned.

When rights are chipped away, no matter whoms, it is only a matter of time, before more are chipped away. If a nation is free the whole nation of people is free, when one is oppressed, the whole nation will be oppressed.

  • I’m but a lowly Canuck but I’m rooting for you, FWIW.

  • thank you for sharing your story. we all need to hear it.

  • In your statement of “the unemployed, the uninsured and the undereducated”   How is the “undereducated” a fault falling under Bush’s policies?  He’s been in office under four years, so I don’t see how that is his “fault”.

I have no problem with people having opinions, but I do have a problem with the facts being distorted.

  • It IS amazing what Bush has “created” for us here. Starting to almost not feel like America anymore. What DID ever happen to freedom of speech and rights to peaceful protest, huh??????

  • most protestors I know (and yes I know some personally and not all Democrats some are even Republicans who have protested other causes) expect to be jailed…it thrills them to be able to tell stories like this to promote their “cause”.

  • Democrats have just as much blame, just as much blood, on their hands as the Republicans for the suffering in the United States and around the world. They had time under Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, and Clinton to solve problems, but they each failed. The same is true for Eisenhower, Nixon, and both Bush Sr. and Jr. It is to the shame of both parties that all they want to do is point fingers, make accusations, but neither wants to take responsibility for their actions. Neither wants to solve the problems facing the poor, the uneducated, et cetera. The Democrats are the party of the rich elitist snobs who pay lip service to “the working man,” while the Republicans just don’t give a rip.

Both parties have stolen from the poor and the middle class, both parties have taken steps to limit individual freedom, both parties have taken steps to silence their critics, both parties have failed to be held accountable for their actions. Kerry supported the Patriot Act. Bush signed it into law. Kerry supported Campaign Finance Reform. Bush signed it into law. Both have failed to support and defend the constitution as required by their oaths of office. There is no difference between Democrat and Republican.

I am outraged that people are willing to point fingers at one side or the other, but are willing to turn a blind eye to the sins of their respective party. Democrats can do no wrong, so Chappaquidic didn’t happen. Kerry confesses to commiting war crimes, then becomes a presidental candidate. Republicans can do no wrong, so Nixon and Watergate is forgotten, and Bush Jr. does his thing. It is beyond hypocricy to denounce Bush only to support Kerry. It is beyond hypocricy to denounce Kerry only to support Bush.

Enough of the foolish outrage!!! Enough of the elitish snobbishness from the Left and the Right!!!

It is time to take a stand for the American people, not for the “working man,” “working families,” or other demographic titles, labels, and cliches that are totally meaningless. It is time for “We, the People…” to take a stand and get rid of all of these troublemakers, Democrat and Republican.

If the Constitution and the Bill of Rights mean something to you, then find a candidate who stands for these American principles. If you care not for these freedoms guaranteed to us by the Constitution, then continue your support for Kerry and/or Bush.

I will be voting this year. Not for Bush. Not for kerry. Not for Nader. I’m voting for the people of the United States of America.

    peace – accept nothing less

    Jim

  • Thanks for sharing this important story.

  • Excellent blog! wow, how frightening to think that the president is so scared of everyone who doesn’t agree with him. We have to get him out of office!

  • I’ve read some similar stories/accounts on Kos. You have to think that NYC’s strategy is to arrest tons of folks and sort it all later in court. Very sad. Effective but sad.

  • greater rights and greater wrongs have befallen the world before and since this travesty.

    There is no resolution

  • Will share at my site! Lack of surprise is NOT lack of outrage.

  • I got sent your link.  Here in Iowa protesters were arrested for crossing a street and getting too close to a Bush rally or so I was told by my daughter’s friend.  But it has not made the papers yet.

  • eh…yeah, republicans suck..but I sure hope you realize that democrats do too. This whole “right-wing” vs. “left-wing” charade has got everyone fooled and divided, whereas if we as a people rose up together and didn’t just protest ONE party, but protested the WHOLE government and all the BS that they put us through, then maybe they would be forced to listen us. Clinton sucked too. Has anyone forgotten his uncalled for reutine bombings of Iraq? Eh. Don’t believe everything you read, and fight our corrupt government as a whole, rather than just raging at ONE man and blaming him for the problems of the entire nation, when our problems actually stem from decades worth of crappy, degenerate government who becomes more and more self serving with each term.

  • props to MADcrewMOM and wordwarrior39

  • We are the new Soviets.

  • wow, I almost cried when I read about that girl.

  • *shaking head* Hitler in disguise.

  • Do you think perhaps the terrorists have to bear some of the responsibility for the mess we are in? All the blame for everything that’s happened since 911 seems to be placed squarely on Bush’s head. Doesn’t that strike you as simplistic?
