TUESDAY POLITICS
I cannot freaking believe it. Today Congress actually overrode a veto from the Bushmeister for the first time ever. It’s a big honking $23.2 billion water bill that would provide funding to do coastal restoration in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina and improve the Florida Everglades. It also would include new locks to speed up freight traffic on the Mississippi River where many of the locks and dams date from the Depression era. The vote was 361-54 and the Senate is expected to follow suit tomorrow. Of course, there was a little kvetching. Senator Feingold represented some who felt the bill wouldn’t do enough to improve the Corps of Engineers, who will be in charge of most of it. And we know what a crappy job they did about taking care of the levees off Louisiana before it was too late. Let’s hope this sets a precedent that encourages a little more resistance in D.C. to the ongoing dictatorship of GWB.
(Amendment from SimplyPynki: In the defense of the ACoE. They had been telling people in the right
positions that the levies in NOLA wouldn’t withstand big hurricanes. No
one was listening, and no one was giving them the money to rectify the
problem.)
Deep Thought: “Some folks say it was a miracle. Saint Francis suddenly appeared and knocked the next pitch clean over the fence. But I think it was just a lucky swing.”
Today I am grateful for: Breathing
Guess the Movie: “Well, here I am, anonymous all right. With guys nobody really cares about. They come from the end of the line, most of ‘em. Small towns you never heard of: Pulaski, Tennessee; Brandon, Mississippi; Pork Van, Utah; Wampum, Pennsylvania. Two years’ high school’s about it, maybe if they’re lucky a job waiting for them back at a factory, but most of ‘em got nothing. They’re poor, they’re the unwanted, yet they’re fighting for our society and our freedom. It’s weird, isn’t it? They’re the bottom of the barrel and they know it. Maybe that’s why they call themselves grunts, cause a grunt can take it, can take anything. They’re the best I’ve ever seen, Grandma. The heart & soul.” Answer: Platoon, 1986. Winner: buddhacat.
House Tied In Knots Over Resolution To Impeach Cheney
Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, is trying to impeach Vice President Cheney for what he describes as “high crimes and misdemeanors” before the invasion of Iraq. (Rest of article here.)

Movie=Saving Private Ryan?
As for the veto…let’s hope it’s a trend!
Good guess, but no. Think about 20 years ago.
yay for congress!
I do believe my hometown’s banks project was also riding on that water bill.
*sparkle
I can’t believe it! Wow!
Platoon.
I wish the Democrats could get together and have a plan. Bless Kucinich’s heart for pushing for impeachment, but he certainly can’t do it alone, and he could very well blow off any chance for it to happen at all. Cheney does need to be impeached, and Bush should follow, but get a plan, damn it!
Another key vote today: the Senate Judiciary committee voted 11-8 to recommend confirmation of Mukasey for Attorney General. Senators Shumer (NY) and Feinstein (CA) crossed party lines and voted with the Republicans. Feinstein already lost my support, but now I’ll actively try to chase her out of politics.
Ah, yes. Breathing. I join you in being grateful for that. And appreciative.
herr bush isn’t pleased. sad monkey poops everywhere.
I need to pay more attention to this suff.
I hope your day is great!
I am definitely on a Kucinich kick lately!
It’s about time, isn’t it?
Platoon wins!
Can you let us guess the lines from THE NOTEBOOK? i love it.. hehe..=)
In the defense of the ACoE. They had been telling people in the right positions that the levies in NOLA wouldn’t withstand big hurricanes. No one was listening, and no one was giving them the money to rectify the problem.
Yes, actually there was funding to fix the levies until it was diverted to the war effort. Safer? I think not.
Hey! Thanks so much for stopping by with your book recommendation. I’m going to look for it. And what a great site here! I’m having fun reading a bit. *waves*
Hey there
Maybe there is some hope after all. Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy your posts. Hope all is well in your world. Take care.
Yay for congress and Kucinich
Impeachment’s appropriate, but just plain wrong. Nixon should have been impeached, and would have been, and that wouldabeenfine. Clinton prolly deserved impeachment for the perjury, but Hillary was right that the whole thing was a right-wing conspiracy in the first place.
The trouble with impeachment — in this case as well as in Clinton’s — is that it shouldn’t be political, but always is. And anything that divides the country should prolly be avoided.
Yeah, Bush and Cheney should be impeached, and even jailed.
But hell. Let’s just vote them out of office and get on with solving our problems.
Some how I missed that news.
Thanks for stopping by my place and saying a word or two. Be interested to know how you stumbled into my world.
Won’t remember to come back here to see if you answer.
Woohoo on the veto! Thanks for stopping by.
Go Congress!!
How’d you fare through the wind storm this past week? Keep your power? It was a little crazy here.
ryc, I would definitely recommend the movie ‘Interiors.’
Do people ever seriously stop and think for a minute about what would happen if the niceties of democracy were totally suspended in the USA and the whole country just became a lot more like Myanmar? Or like Nazi Germany maybe?
I HATE people who say to me oh pooh pooh pooh you paranoid Jew, there isn’t going to be another Holocaust. Usually they are snobs.
Time to finish my beer.
I think that it would be interesting if there was a YouTube video of Hilary giving Bill a golden shower. That would be very sexy indeed.
RYC: I’m overwhelmed by the holidays, too. I can’t believe Thanksgiving is next week. Where the heck has my time gone?
RYC: Thanks for stopping by. One of the things that drives me nuts about the medical industry is that they refuse to accept ‘outside’ treatments or even information. (but don’t get me started on a medical rant!)
It’s about time ‘they’ actually do something!!! In defense of the COE – they can only do so much with what little they get – and no one thinks of them until something BIG happens. Have a great day!!!
RYC: I love books – probably have a thousand! I’m an ‘eclectic’ reader. Trash (normally), good stuff( fiction – Steinbeck, etc…insite encouraged!), textbooks, etc… Currently on a YA kick!
RYC: The cold that’s been going around is exhausting. I’m glad you have the time and space to take care of yourself. That’s a blessing. Oh yea.
I’m always delighted to get your comments. Hope your friend is doing better. Advocating is challenging and not my long suit. I particularly enjoyed your next blog on art.
May you and yours have a thanks-filled Thanksgiving.
Peace be with you, dear heart. Namaste!
This is a happy thought.. that they might actually put some money behind the common good.Living where i live I know this issue is very important…. reminds me of that old Joni Mitchell song about what they did to paradise.
Impeachment is needed for many in power presently…
i was watching a documentary last night on pbs about SAIC that makes blackwater look like a highschool club. the system is broken and bush is just a pawn. er.
have a great thanksgiving!
Hope all is well with you!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Hope you’re relaxin’
Hooray for small victories to improve our national infrastructure instead of fattening the corporate wealth-structure…
I love the layout of your blog. Kudos!
RYC I figured there must be some value to humility considering how much humble pie I have been served.I am hard headed though and will probably be working on developing true humility for the rest of my life:)Too bad we can’t serve it daily to the arrogant and ego driven people who run things in the government…..
Enjoying the wacky weather? It’s WEIRD!!!
