Appetizer – Which celebrity (or celebrities) do you think will make headlines this year?
Oh
cripes, as if I care, let’s see, reaching directly to my left I can
pick up a recent Entertainment Weekly. I got suckered into subscribing
to it sometime last year by a clever ploy at Best Buy where you got a
free 6 months when you purchased something or other. Then of course I
became immediately addicted to knowing what latest movies, books,
music, etc. were out and how they were reviewed. So let’s see, here are
three celebrities right off the first open page that I figure will make
headlines this year – Nicole Kidman (besides being a gorgeous and also
competent actress in her own right, she picks bodacious men to hang out
with), Justin Timberlake (omigod, he dumped Cameron Diaz – actually I
don’t know which way it went, maybe she dumped him), and Stephen
Colbert (I hope I hope).
Soup – They say that good things come in small packages? What is something little that you think is great?
The
first thing that popped into my head is some scallops I had over 40
years ago at an Ivar’s outside seafood bar on Seattle’s waterfront.
I’ve never forgotten them. I love shellfish with a deep and abiding
love.
Salad – Name a song that makes you want to dance.
For that I quickly turn to Pandora, and if you haven’t discovered Pandora yet click here.
It’s an online radio where you can plug in songs you know you like and
it will line up several different stations of music that its little
computer mind figures are similar. That way you can discover a whole
lot of music you might not have heard yet. So the first one that came
up that qualifies for me is one of my all-time all-life favorites -
Into the Mystic – Van Morrison – the Moondance album. I met the Van
once in a little store out in Marin County. I was with a musician from
the house I lived in with a little rock band at the time and we both
got to shake his hand. Across the road was a barn with “Freedom’s just
another word for nothin’ left to lose” painted on it in big red
letters. Yes, it was the late ’60′s.
Main Course – What is your favorite font?
Comic sans MS lately. It’s the font in my blog. Weird title, huh? No idea what it means.
Dessert – If you were to write a do-it-yourself article, what would it be about?
Oh
I guess one thing would be teaching yourself HTML. It’s not that hard
if you have that kind of mind. I started by using the View in the
toolbar you see above and going to View Page Source in any web page you
happen to be on. You can see how they did it. Then there’s nifty
javascripts you can copy from Dynamic Drive. If you can drive a car, play video games, or blog, you can learn HTML. Plus, there’s plenty of online tutorials.
Deep Thought:
“Don’t ever get your speedometer confused with your clock, like I did
once, because the faster you go the later you think you are.”
Today I am grateful for: Shenanigans
Guess the Movie:
“Loneliness has followed me my whole life, everywhere. In bars, in
cars, sidewalks, stores, everywhere. There’s no escape. I’m God’s
lonely man.” Answer: Taxi Driver, 1976.
Winner: buttermelon.
Stop This War, Now!
by Molly Ivins
The president of the United States does not have the sense God gave a duck—so it’s up to us. You and me, Bubba.
I
don’t know why Bush is just standing there like a frozen rabbit, but
it’s time we found out. The fact is we have to do something about it.
This country is being torn apart by an evil and unnecessary war, and it
has to be stopped now. (Rest of article here.)

that guess the movie, i just watched that in the past week. i can’t think of what it is though. that’ll drive me crazy.
Clue – New York City.
the music in “taxi driver” was always so disturbingly dark to me – with the intense horns – like they were pointing a finger at travis bickle – “it was him! he is the one!”
happy first week of new year’s!
You got it!
(1) Do not care. Cannot guess. OK, maybe Tony Blair will end up having an affair with David Beckham’s Spice Girl wife.
(2) There is this little tiny medal, the kind you used to get on boardwalks or amusement piers, you’d put – I don’t know – some coin in and then you could type in a short message and the machine would flatten the coin and press this message into it. On a really, really bad day as a kid my favorite uncle took me on a walk to an arcade and made this one for me, it says I am a “tough guy.” I have medals I’ve won, I’m not even sure where they are, but that one is always with me.
(3) anything by Cole Porter
(4) oooo, I was a graphics student once… I still think, there was a Letraset font way back when (anyone remember Letraset? well, they did develop the Pantone System) called “Magnificat” – it was totally, totally illegible, but oh so beautiful (wow, found it on this page). I used one letter once in a logo project. When I designed a newspaper I used Bodoni for all the headlines, which is simple and beautiful and was what the New-York Herald Tribune (the first great newspaper design) used.
(5) Hmmm, just tried to do one for teachers on “how to choose technology for students” – so maybe that.
Taxi Driver of course a favorite, thanks for the Molly Ivins link.
You’re so clever to teach yourself html.
tasty…
I absolutely love Pandora. It was my favorite new good thing for some time and I told people about it ad nauseum, but they were all grateful to me in the end.
I have never seen Taxi Driver. I’ve also never seen Raging Bull nor any of the Godfather movies. I keep meaning to see the first two. Not all that keen on the last.
thanks for the link. pandora is awesome.
Thanks for posting the “Stop the war now” part.
a song that makes me want to dance? ‘suedehead’
celeb news: burt bacarach’s daughter committed suicide today or last night. so sad.
Taxi Driver is the movie… I didn’t look to see if somebody else got it… oh heay soobee72 did.
Thanks for the tip on html code. I was going to buy front page. Someone else told me to use that.
I am not sure what I would write a self help book about…, that is sad huh?
Hugs, Tricia
I like shenanigans too. I was tempted to play a trick on Barbara tonight (hide a list she’d made for herself, things to remember to do tomorrow) but thought better of it. Sense of humor is not Barbara’s long suit.
Soup – baby animals. Their so cool & they grow so fast. Our cat just had her kittens after Christmas & I posted about it on my site. I been watching them a lot. Life really is a miracle & it makes me think a lot about my own life. Kev
ryc: Why would you follow it? I do because of who it links me to, and because of memory, and because sometimes, I need the escape to that adolescent fantasy world.
I love Entertainment Weekly but as with most magazines, after a year or so I get bored and need a break.
I knew that you especially would love that book. The deep map is such a vital concept. My son once told me that when I walk cities I know with him I say far more about what was there than what is. I am fascinated by the chance to peel back the layers…
Boy – my dream would be that all tabloids (reputable or not) go out of business. I don’t care who is sleeping with who, whose having a baby (is all of Hollywood pregnant?) or who is doing what? I’d rather not know. I wonder why the stalk-arazzi aren’t arrested on a daily basis. There is a fine line between freedom of speech and a person’s inalienable right to privacy. Do they cross it? More often than not, I would think. So, with that said, I’d like to, then, name the 5 people I’d love to NOT SEE in the headlines: 1) Nicole Ritchie/Lindsay Lohan/the ever-shrinking Olson twin (leave these poor women in peace about their illnesses. 2) Tom Cruise (sick of his rants, raves, and silliness). 3) Eva Langoria (boy, did her publicist put her out into the world with a HUGE push). 4) Dog the Bounty Hunter (What? Who? I know – my point exactly. He’s a bounty hunter). 5) Elvis (the man is DEAD all ready)
Celebrites in the News? Probably the same vacuous bunch as allways.
Good thing in a small package? ME!
Song that makes me want to dance? Way too many to choose from but definately anything by Van Morrison!
Favorite Font? Comic Sans for its clarity, Script ’cause I just like the way it looks.
Do it yourslef article? I’ll teach you how to make hand-rolled noodles if you walk me thru HTML!
You caught me in the middle of actualy writting todays post, there’s A LOT more there if you want to go back and check it out.
My four-course: Soup - his smile; Salad – 13th (Swing Radio Mix) by the Cure; Main Course – Papyrus ( I also use this for my own blog); Dessert – The Many Way to Tie Your Shoes - so little children won’t feel bad if they can’t learn the loop-de-loop song
oooops…I am so behind over here! almost time for another lovely and ever entertaing friday five!
I wish i could be interested in the lives of celebrities but I can’t seem to work up much interest.I do think Steven Colbert might be fun to learn about because he is smart and funny and i would be cuious to see if his personality is a persona or the real thing.
I live with my mom…so calling her would be a waste.
I will be back to comment…………. but this morning I’ve been cooperating in one of these “blog TAG” games and I am “tagging” you to play along if you are so inclined….. if YES then visit my blog for the few/simple rules and my response to the theme>> 6 weird things about me…
*big smile* your response will most likely be mine from now on as I sometimes like to play but do not like to tag people – sort of like a chain letter-pressure and ICK. LOL. You have a wonderful feature here that I always enjoy, similar to provoking reflection of various types as Tag games yet without any “pressure” to play or pass it on. I have always liked the meal theme, too, being a ‘food” oriented person.
OK. I shall play and enjoy your daily smorgasbord:
Appetizer: This one prompts me to consider dieting as I have not the least interest in anything offered. Lots of empty calories for stuff that looks good and scrumptious and usually lacks any substance.
SOUP: the little Chicklets (gum)… I love the colors and how tiny they are, though rarely indulge.
SALAD: Definitely MOONDANCE, nearly anything STEVIE WONDER… I love music so this is tough and often can’t remember specific songs but at a party or event within 4 notes/beats I will jump up with excitement, knowing I need to move! (regardless of my body’s endurance or ability to withstand my spirit).
*Lorraine is playing a little bit *she’s here working on some handmade cards* and she says all she can think about is a POLKA…*
Main Course: favorite font? hahaha… this is a good one for me because I will spend a ridiculous amount of time checking out various fonts. At work (I am an Office Manager) I am usually changing everyone else’s generated ho-hum courier or times new roman fonts to Tahoma but for other more creative things or titles I pick spashier stuff.
Dessert: if I were going to write a “Do It Yourself” article it would probably be encouraging folks to try writing poetry or blogging online… something to help folks cross over into some of the simple pleasures on online games, or things available that are relaxing. Reducing computer-phobia.
