  • FRIDAY FIVE

Appetizer – What is a word that you use that would not be considered common?
Beats me why the first thing that came to mind was the word “fetch”, as used in the teen movie, Mean Girls, when one girl keeps saying “that is so fetch.” I love that phrase and think it a lot in my head, but I actually rarely say it out loud because I figure hardly anyone would remember where it’s from and they’ll just think I’m nuts. By the way, saw Lindsay Lohan in Prairie Home Companion this week and thought she gave a nice little performance in a rather different role. Quite a nice segue (now there’s a word you don’t hear every day) for her to work alongside a pro like Meryl Streep. That is so fetch, LL.

Soup – What theme of calendar do you have on your wall this year?
Calendar freak here. One in every room of the house. The one in this room is from the company that delivers my oil and has nature photos on it. Living room – one from Reed College where I went freshman year – more nature. Kitchen – one from a realtor I engaged when I thought I might move who later dropped off my map – more nature. Bathroom – the Humane Society – animal children, thank god. Bedroom – Hawaii – scenes from there. Gotta love those free calendars. Even the last one someone gave me. But I would have bought them for every room anyway if the free ones hadn’t arrived.

Salad – Name 3 people you speak with by telephone a regular basis.
My daughter, turtle_dove, my son (her younger brother), and my Recovery sponsee, with whom I just had a weekly meeting at my house and then went to an AA meeting. I’m more of an email person actually. Funny how that’s come to be. Are we losing the art of actual voice connection? I know I’m not the only one.

Main Course – If you could buy a new outfit for someone you know – who would it be and what would you purchase for them?
I have a 10-year-old granddaughter who has weight issues and is already self-conscious about it. I often watch for outfits for her on the occasions when I shop for myself that would make her feel comfortable and at ease. I keep them at my house for times when she visits and feels like trying on something new.

Dessert – What is the last beverage you drank?
Coffee at the meeting I attended earlier. I pretty much keep it to 3 cups a day – usually decaf.

Deep Thought: “Instead of a regular arm, Carl had been born with a pigeon’s wing. The odd thing was, all through his life, no one had ever laughed at his wing – not even the mean kids at school. Then one day he realized why: He looked in the mirror and saw that HE WAS A PIGEON! He shit right there, as he often did, wherever he was.”
Today I am grateful for: Liberals no matter how far left they get.
Guess the Movie: “I want someone good, I mean very good, to plant that gun. I don’t want my brother coming out of the bathroom with just his dick in his hands.” Answer: The Godfather, 1972. Winner: pray14me.
Soldier’s Duty: Say No to Illegal War
    by Michael Honey

Lost in the media frenzy over the killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, First Lt. Ehren Watada, of Fort Lewis, opened another front in the conflict over President Bush’s war of choice in Iraq. At a news conference in Tacoma a few hours before al-Zarqawi’s death, Watada announced his refusal of orders to deploy to Iraq on grounds that the war is illegal as well as immoral. • The Godfather, and I am first. As a teacher I have often wished that I could buy clothes for students. I actually did the Christmas thing one year, and bought lots of things for a students. She didn’t seem very grateful, and I was disappointed, I realize that was wrong of me. It is not supposed to be about that, I should give without expecting anything in return.
    Have a lovely weekend.

  • Yes you are and you get the blue ribbon!

  • I knew the movie too but was second, too bad. Our school parent group gave the principal money to buy sweats for kids who have accidents at school.

The Enchantress – A long hippie skirt, beads, peasant blouse, India sandals. She would never wear it, but it would be fun.

  • I love “Mean Girls!” Lacey Chabert’s character, Gretchen Weiners, whose father was the inventor of Toaster Strudels, was the one who kept on trying to make “fetch” a cool word, which pissed off Regina George.

  • I confess I only thought it was Godfather I.  In my mind, Godfather II was a possibility.

  • My last beverage was beer. Oh, and I use “arcane” too much.

  • i saw the movie yesterday! that’s my favorite teen movie.

  • As usual…love the deep thought!  Always love your articles, even if I am more conservative!

You are a good cookie!  And a smart one, too.

  • Still loving this Friday 5 business of yours…and I’m late and of course it’s the Godfather!

  • That is a cool ruin there.  Is it Mayan?

  • Actually, the one that kept saying “fetch” in the movie was not Lindsay, it was Lacey Chabert from Party of Five.  She played the part of Gretchen in Mean Girls.  She wanted everyone to make “fetch” a catch phrase.  The only reason why I know this is because I’ve had to watch that movie like 200 times since I have a teenage daughter!     The word that always plays around in my head is nepotism….I have no idea why but I like the way it sounds!

    Have a great weekend.

p.s.  I believe the movie is The God Father and it was Sonny who said it.  Am I right????

  • I want to see that Prairie Home movie!

  • interesting post with the Friday Five theme! I shall try and visit more often as my hectic schedule is dying down a bit…

My mom is into calendars too… almost one in every room. I only have a 2 bedroom condo, but I typically have 2-3 up around the house.

  • what a nice grandma….

  • People always get me calenders, but I am not very good at keeping up with them. Not sure why, but I never have been, don’t wear a watch either.

  • loved the deep thought…totally reminded me of the time i was downtown and all of a sudden……..SPLAT…right on my head and shoulder!   guess ya go where ya gotta go when you’re a pigeon! lol

  • I remember my brother introduced me to the term ” hockeypuck” as a replacement for cursing…..and I sometimes use common German words for fun…but mostly my use of language is pretty standard. I am a calender person too…except for cat calenders. I have seen one too many of those.

  • I saw mean girls on tv not to long ago. It was actually funny

  • Heh, uncommon words are the best kind to use in any given situation. Nothing like saying something that makes a person go “Huh?”.

  • words.  since i’ve been hanging out with the varis crew i’ve noticed that they use the word “vortex” quite a bit.  i’ve been tying to sneak it into conversation, but i haven’t quite got it down.

  • ‘salad days’ that is my new words of the week.  When my daughter was 10- I had the WORST time finding her clothes. It’s such an inbetween size and age- I found jeans for her at Kmart that looked good and fit decently- she has slimmed down a ton since that time.
