    Bukowski:  Born Into This
    and
    Be Here To Love Me

You’d have to be a true romantic I guess to get these two wild
men.  One, a poet, the other a songwriter – both idolized by other
poets and musicians and barely known by anyone else.  They lived
to write and wrote to live, and both were flat out alcoholics by the
    time they died.  Charles
“Hank” Bukowski (1920-1994) lived most of
his life in L.A. and survived being repeatedly beaten by his father as
a child.  Townes Van Zandt (1944-97) came out of Texas, and survived three
months of shock treatment permitted by his parents for manic
depression, losing his memories of his childhood.
    These
documentaries on DVD tell their stories, how in spite of their
    incredible
talents, they never really became household names – like the more
famous Beat Poets in Bukowski’s case or the singer-songwriters who made
his music famous in Van Zandt’s, people like Kris Kristofferson,
Willie Nelson, and Emmy Lou Harris (all of whom appear in the
film).  Both went through good women like they went through drugs
    - hell bent for leather, and each had one close by when they
died.   Their stories are fascinating and in their corners of
the artistic world they are adored.  Bukowski lived to 74 and died
of pneumonia while being treated for leukemia.  Townes Van Zandt’s
heart gave out after hip surgery at age 53.   Give them a
visit – it’s a world most of us will never know and one they had no
choice but to live in.  Here’s a verse by  Townes Van Zandt
    you might recognize:

    If I needed you
    would you come to me,
    would you come to me,
    and ease my pain?
    If you needed me
    I would come to you
    I’d swim the seas
    for to ease your pain

and here’s a short poem by Bukowski:

    What Can We Do?

at their best, there is gentleness in Humanity.
some understanding and, at times, acts of
    courage
but all in all it is a mass, a glob that doesn’t
    have too much.
it is like a large animal deep in sleep and
    almost nothing can awaken it.
when activated it’s best at brutality,
    selfishness, unjust judgments, murder.

    Deep Thought:
“You might think that the favorite plant of the porcupine is the
cactus, but it’s thinking like that that has almost ruined this
    country.”
Today I am grateful for:  Laughter
    Guess the Movie:  “How
dare you open a Space Ranger’s helmet on an uncharted planet? My
eyeballs could have been sucked out of their sockets!”
Answer:  Toy Story, 1995.  Winner:  sfamylou.
    Report exonorates Armstrong of doping

    ARTHUR MAX

    Associated Press

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – Lance Armstrong called it a “witch hunt” from
the very beginning, saying a French newspaper used dubious evidence to
accuse him of doping – even charging that lab officials mishandled his
samples and broke the rules.  (Rest of article here.)

  • i never realized bukowski wasnt well-known. but then again i watch documentaries about the beat generation for fun.

women by bukowski was definitely an interesting read which i hear is loosely based on his own life. i cant imagine leading such a lifestyle/relationships.

  • They definitely seem interesting. Going to check it out. I like that poem by Bukowski.  ~lea

  • and I never realized Van Zandt wasn’t well-known :)   Wonderful post.

  • an interesting pair. Will look into…

I don’t recognize it, but it sure is a great verse. It reminds me of people I love who I would like to share it with but never will.
Thanks, it makes me feel good.

  • It is amazing how many people rise above horrible beginnings.  They are truly inspiring.

  • It is a happy thing for me that you are posting regularly again. I always enjoy your words and appreciate your stopping and leaving notes at my site! Have a great day today! Peace.

  • Believe me, it has nothing to do with being in “those” circles…sometimes it the very interesting trail of one thing leading to another and wha la….you find something you were unaware of.  Quine (mathmatecian/philosopher) spent most of his life at teaching at Harvard.  I find great interest in reading some of Dennett’s books (not that I agree with them), oddly enough, Dennett was a student of Quine’s.  It’s so cool how these things happen, at least I think anyway.

  • Yes indeedy! Toy Story.

  • what a great post!
    thank you =o)

  • I’ve thought about checking out Van Zant..and now I will, as well as Bukowski.  They must be worth the investigation.

    Thanks.

    John

  • Van Zandt: Have you ever seen a film called “Heartworn Highways”? TVZ is a big part of it, though it’s not biographical. More a snapshot of the birth of “new country” music.

  • Egads, those are awesome poems.  I’m so glad I know you (and thanks for subscribing to blip32962; I don’t update there very often, but I’ll try to tell you when I do).

  • ryc: cool! Once you get it, the other person to look for in the footage is Gamble Rogers (he’s only in one segment, but he’s the whole reason I got the DVD). Or not. Personal bias speaking…  ; )

  • One of my favorite bars in Boston is Bukowski’s. It features a great mural of him. Inspired, gritty.

Townes van Zandt is one of my favorite songwriters. Just a talented man with a tragic life. “To Live is to Fly” covered by the Cowboy Junkies is one of my all-time favorites.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • I didn’t know TVZ was covered by Cowboy Junkies.

  • I had heard of Townes van Zandt, but wasn’t sure I had ever heard anything of his.  I looked in my Itunes, and was surprised that a number of his songs came up, including a beautiful version of “If I Needed You” by Emmylou Harris (which I am listening to now).  Thanks for sharing a little of his story.

  • wow!  i had no idea that these two men existed.  it’s nice that you can bring some light to their talents and show how much they’ve added to this world.

  • Thanks! It is nice to be home!! I would love to have coffee again with you sometime soon…..I need to pick your brain about cats…….Frankie & my husband aren’t getting along well at all…. the thoughts  of leaving them alone while I’m in Costa Rica aren’t too pleasant!  I’ve been thinking of getting another cat…..something other than Chuck for Frankie to pick on but I’m just not sure!!!!!!!!

You do come up with the most interesting people to blog about…..I had heard of Van Zandt but didn’t know much of his story & had never heard of Bukowski…I will have to read some more of his stuff!!

  • RYC:  Much wisdom can I learn from you.  :)   You are a good friend to have.

  • Thank you for the welcome.

  • Lionne,

Thank you for the encouragement and advice.  I do appreciate it.

    John

  • I just adore Townes Van Zandt – he wrote some incredible songs. Getting his recorded work is not easy…

As far as Bukowski goes, I suppose I’d say he is an aquired taste for this poet. I’ve just never been completely in synch to his particular beat… I would not mind at all learning more about his life, though.

  • Don’t know Buowski, but will have to check him out.

It seems that so many of the VERY talented writers are writing through their own angst.  So many are or were alcoholics, drug addicts, and had BIG problems with depressionor other mental problems.  Wonder why that is?  Maybe happy people haven’t done enough “suffering” to write so deeply?

  • Far out is right. I’ve been meaning to get back to you all day, I was so excited to read what you wrote today about transcription. It’s such a small world. Things have been so hectic today, one thing after another. But I did read this early this morning, and have been thinking about you.  When you wrote me the other day that you worked in a large university hospital, I just assumed (wrong thing to do, I know) that you were an RN or corporate executive or doctor. Wow, an MT. I’m so impressed that you’ve been doing that for so long and how you began. I’m too old to ever get to far down the road with it, though we all have our thoughts of doing it from home. With my computer knowledge, I think I would be better off having someone around who could see when I was really effing up rather than lose medical records from home. But I’ve got a few places and friends who might help me along here when the time comes. We’ll see. I don’t want to let too much time go by, things are changing so in that field, I’ve heard, with voice activation and all.  Anyway, I’m so glad I posted my “poor me with the student loan to pay back” stuff. I’m really glad you’re doing something different you enjoy also with web page designing. I’m glad I met you. I figure someone who is an MT and a Neil Young fan is someone after my own heart. ~Lea
