  • TUESDAY POLITICS

Mike Luckovich is 46.  This is the second time he’s won the
Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning since he began his career in
1984 at age 24 after graduating from UDub in Seattle with a degree in
political science.  He’s worked for the Atlanta
Journal-Constitution since 1984.  This is one of his best known
recent cartoons, listing the names of 2000 killed in Iraq.

    The
Pulitzer Prize is an American award regarded as the highest honor in
print journalism, literary achievements, and musical compositions. It
is administered by Columbia University in New York City.  The 2006
Pulitzer Prize winners and nominated finalists were announced Monday,
April 17.  Prizes are awarded in 21 categories. The prize was
established by Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian-American journalist and
newspaper publisher, who left money to Columbia University upon his
death in 1911. Part of the bequest was used to begin the university’s
journalism school in 1912. The first Pulitzer Prizes were awarded on
June 4, 1917, and they are now announced each April. Recipients of the
award are chosen by an independent board.  This is who won this year.   And more about Mike Luckovich.

Deep Thought:  “Laugh, clown, laugh. This is what I tell myself whenever I dress up like Bozo.”
Today I am grateful for:  Things that are indescribable.
    Guess the Movie:  “Our
city is counting on you to collect those screams. Without scream, we
have no power. Yes, it’s dangerous work, and that’s why I need you to
be at your best. I need scarers who are confident, tenacious, tough,
intimidating.”  Answer:  Monsters, Inc., 2001.  Winner: RnBoW_SPOT.
Taxpayer Says No More for War

    by David B. Berrian
    To the IRS:
I can’t do this any more. I will no longer pay for war — the murder of
civilians — with my tax dollars.  (Rest of article here.)

  • Thanks for sharing & Monsters Inc.

  • Yep, Monsters Inc.

  • Oh darn! I actually knew that movie! LOL! That was a fun movie.

WHY? Because the guy who is “the decider” thought God talked to him.

  • the irony of pulitzer is that he was one of the originators of yellow journalism.

  • I love the WHY. I have to agree with skanickadee – cause God told him too. Freaks me out!

  • Sadly, it seems like soon he’ll be able to redraw the cartoon, this time with the question mark made of more names.

  • Monsters Inc. = yes indeedy!

  • I agree with pina la nina !

  • I’m glad that the media still honors those who speak out. So much seems to be corporate news.

  • yeah…  i heard this guy on the radio doing an interview today.  it was interesting that he enjoyed it more when politicians became really angry at his cartoons, as opposed to those who simply took them in stride.

  • I couldn’t help myself. I was on the phone with raindropsoup during the storm and she wanted to see the hail. lmao So, in the freezer it went.

  • As a former reporter, I love the day they give out the Pulitzers. Funny, I’m a jealous person but I NEVER get jealous of the winners. My colleagues won once and it was utter chaos in the newsroom. Those cartoons were fantastic. Thanks for the great blog.

  • I do not believe that things like God needed them in heaven or God works in mysterous ways.  But I do believe that we create our world with our thinking and if our thoughts are filled with love the universe moves with you. Judi

  • ryc: i think when you experience someone elses pain withoput attachment to them it is not codependant.

.like if x goes back to drinking and you feel thier depression and sadness fine.

.you stop, see how or if it is affecting you and approach x ,or not approach x ,out of a place of unselfish compassion.

Know that your feelings are there but seeing them helps you reach out in an unselfish way. If x just wants you to hold them..then thats that. No judging just compassion.

    sorry for the ramble.

  • have you seen spell bound?
i just got around to reading the post before this, and you mentioned a spelling Bee movie.
i saw it the other day, and i thought it looked cool. Spell bound is a documentary though.

  • ohh and RTC: 7 pm

  • thanks for stopping by and the compliment. have a wonderful weekend.

  • I wonder what Luckovich drew around the time of the Mohammed/cartoon fiasco.

  • RYC: Really don’t worry about it. I was just making sure you were still alive out there. Now I know you are. I understand what you mean about spending too much time here. I have started limiting myself to weekends. Speaking of weekends, enjoy the rest of yours.
