FRIDAY FIVE
(Senior moment – I forgot it’s Saturday – April Fool on me)
Appetizer – Name 3 things that you think are strange.
1. That cows lie down to sleep but horses stand up.
2. That bird flu is expected on the West Coast by THIS SUMMER
(according to Google news) but nobody seems to know it in my neck of the
woods yet.
3. Lawnmowers.
Soup – What was the last ceremony you attended?
A 23-year recovery birthday of my very own sponsor. We do recover but we never get cured. There’s a difference.
Salad – What is one lesson you have learned in the past year?
I learned that I can give myself one Home Alone day each week for
spiritual regrouping and restoration to sanity. Plus catching up
on the laundry.
Main Course – Tell us about one of your childhood memories.
One night when I was about 11 I suddenly ran a high fever and had a big
pain in my neck. My mother somehow knew something was really
wrong, threw me in the car and drove like a maniac to the nearest hospital
where they did a spinal tap and diagnosed meningitis. I was lucky
she acted that fast. After a month in the hospital and some weeks
of a slightly paralyzed leg, I fully recovered. It took 3 nurses and my
mother to hold me down for the leaving-the-hospital final check spinal
tap once I knew what to expect.
Dessert – If you could extend any of the four seasons to be twice as long as normal, which season would you want to lengthen?
Summer if it would stay in the 70’s or 80’s the whole time. Years
of living in Oregon have left me with a great need for summer to make
up for all the grey rainy days. Not complaining though – we
Oregonians feel lucky we don’t have major weather disasters. We
are due for an earthquake though and we’re just as unprepared for that
as we are bird flu. C’est la vie.
Deep Thought: “What is it that makes a complete stranger dive into an icy river to save a solid gold baby? Maybe we’ll never know.”
Today I am grateful for: Having a house over my head – wait, having a roof to live in.
Guess the Movie: “Whether
or not what we experienced was an According to Hoyle miracle is
insignificant. What is significant is that I felt the touch of God. God
got involved.” Answer: Pulp Fiction, 1994.
Winner: LymphNode
John Dean to Senate: Censure Is Necessary
by John Nichols
“[The] president needs to be reminded that separation of powers does
not mean an isolation of powers,” former White House counsel John Dean
told the Senate Judiciary Committee Friday. “He needs to be told he
cannot simply ignore a law with no consequences.”
Arguing in favor of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold’s motion to censure
President Bush for illegally authorizing the warrantless wiretapping of
the phone conversations of Americans, the man who broke with former
President Richard Nixon to challenge the abuses of the Watergate era
told the committee that Bush’s wrongs were in many senses worse than
those of Nixon. (Rest of article here)

No doubt by feeling better, and knowing you did throw up a wild struggle. When I was a pedi nurse, I realized that very ill children become very close to God and even sophisticated in their behavior. When they came to feel better then they became child like again, and ornery!
I’m a better patient than I used to be, but sometimes I worry that I won’t regress back into what I once was. Old age is going to start creeping up on me any year now. Well, we know it’s already started to do that, but I’m still improving in most respects (in terms of attitude, I mean).
No idea of the movie. I’m pretty sure I haven’t seen it.
Do you think the bird flu is a really a big deal or is it just something generated by our government and the news?
I mean, it doesn’t seem to be a big deal in other countries or they just aren’t telling us about all the misery and death in those counties.
hmmmmm
Most people don’t realize how important quiet time is. Time to just be and regenerate. It seems as if everyone is always running here and running there. I like peace and quiet.
I’m glad your mom knew what to do. I’m glad you are here.
I don’t really have anything in particular to say about this entry, just that I’ve always enjoyed reading your blog. The Friday Five answers are always especially cool to read.
Pulp Fiction?
that was a good movie
there is a song about spinal meningitis. That song, and a pamplet they handed out at school are the the only things i know about it. and that’s not much because i didn’t read the pamphlet
He he! I do love these friday fives…even a day late! *wink*
Pulp Fiction – bull’s eye!
excellent post and i am sure glad that your momma got you to the hospital!
and that you recovered.:>)
A home alone day? Sounds divine.
My mom took down her bird feeder after reading about bird flu. I read an oped piece the other day written by Marc Siegel. I’m sure you’ve heard of him. He summarizes with this: “Flu changes its shape and size and is a killer worthy of respect and attention. But the most contagious virus among humans is our fear.” He points out that the Spanish Flu of 1918, the virus made the jump to humans BEFORE killing a large number of birds. Interesting piece.
Having lived through several large earthquakes in my time in So Cal, you’d be surprised what can move. My refrigerator door opened, dumped half its contents on the floor, and walked across the kitchen, blocking the entrance. When we pushed it back, we found the cupboards had similarly emptied their contents. We used a shovel and big garbage cans to clean up. All my bookcases were thereafter anchored to the wall. That won’t stop the books from flying off the shelves, but at least you won’t get crushed by the entire piece of furniture, like I nearly was! My poor cats were trying to find the tallest thing to take refuge; I remember the accusatory look in their eyes as everything they jumped on eventually toppled to the floor, while I watched helplessly from the doorway. We didn’t find one kitty for four days. I knew he was in the apartment, but could not find him after we cleaned up. I thought I was losing my mind when the first time I heard a tiny “mew!” but I finally tracked him to a bathroom cabinet. He wouldn’t come out on his own. He fled out the open door the first chance he got and never went inside again.
I appreciate your commenting about my mom. Right now the doctors have called in Hospice, which in their eyes means she has 6 months or less in which to live..we however never believed that, since she is on an alternative healing regimen, it’s viewed differently in our eyes. These episodes of forgetfulness, which are hourly now, are however different than anything we have viewed before. As for long term insurance, NO, she doesn’t have that. My brother and sister that live in Arizona are going to start the process to see what else is available. She won’t like it, I assure you of that, being a very independant person all her life, this will likely be the last straw for her mentally. Not being very close to her for years, it is very hard to assess these things, but between all five of us kids we have all seen things that lead us to believe she won’t ever be able to be alone again..Sad. We have tried to keep her at home, from January to March 15th it was just us 5 doing 24/7 care, so she can have her special diet, but it appears things are moving in a direction we hadn’t expected…thanks for your input…marilyn
“[The] president needs to be reminded that separation of powers does not mean an isolation of powers”
I still have a hard time wrapping my brain around all the power this ONE man has been allowed hold, seemingly, in the palm of his hand.
I can’t believe your mom knew what to do. I’m such an idiot mother. I never know when it’s serious. I’m not being self-effacing. I didn’t call the doctor when I was pregnant and the movement felt weird, and she almost didn’t make it. You’re lucy.
Wow…thats an awesome mom….
Summer, but staying in the 70s and 80s? We call that spring here.
I think it’s just plain old strange that horses stand up to sleep. How tired their legs must get. I like to think that bird flu is mainly media hype so I would worry more about that earthquake.
ryc: the song playing on my site is called “Fire Goddess”, it was written and composed by my other half. No significance to the post, I just like the song!
(1) super glue (2) cream cheese and (3) peanut butter…

A lot of my friends are worried about bird flu I don’t think I will focus on that my belief system says what we focus on grows, Judi
ha!
I need to learn that lesson about taking one day a week. Sounds great. Wishing you a great week. Enjoyed your insights as always. Take care.
I have hurt my leg and can’t go anywhere this week. I hurt my leg actually about a year ago and went to physical therapy a lot for it. Now every once in while it acts up and this time it is so bad that I am not going out at all. It comes and goes with its own schedule so it could just go away again, hopefully it will. I sure stirred up a lot of comments with my wonderings about people commenting and one sided relationships. It is not a desire to be popular it is a desire to have two sided realtionships here and everywhere in my life. I appreciate your friendship Andrea. Judi
nice post.
