I must say I’m no rap afficionado or fan, but I do know who Kanye West is due to a 14-year-old grandson, and apparently I have KW to thank for a little outburst during what was supposed to be a scripted telethon raising money for Katrina’s victims. Specifically, he said: “I hate the way they portray us in the media. You see a black family, it says, “They’re looting.” You see a white family, it says, “They’re looking for food.” And, you know, it’s been five days [waiting for federal help] because most of the people are black. And even for me to complain about it, I would be a hypocrite because I’ve tried to turn away from the TV because it’s too hard to watch. I’ve even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I’m calling my business manager right now to see what is the biggest amount I can give, and just to imagine if I was down there, and those are my people down there. So anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help — with the way America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off, as slow as possible. I mean, the Red Cross is doing everything they can. We already realize a lot of people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way — and they’ve given them permission to go down and shoot us! George Bush doesn’t care about black people!” before they cut him off. Well, somebody had to say it and I guess Condaleeza Rice wasn’t going to. The photo is from the Taipei Times and I guess it’s looking that way to them, too. But to be more educational, three years ago the New Orleans Times-Picayune ran a series of articles about the expected disaster called “Washing Away,” and it’s really worth reading to understand better the gravity of what ignoring the obvious has cost. Heck, three New Orleans schoolboys wrote this article about the coastal erosion themselves. It wasn’t rocket science. They say you go through various stages of grieving when you experience loss. One of the first is stunned and in denial, and right after that comes anger. I think most of us are getting there who weren’t even on the Gulf Coast. Imagine what may be coming from the victims themselves and then be more forgiving of Kanye West.
Deep Thought: “It’s probably not a good idea to be chewing on a toothpick if you’re talking to the president, because what if he tells a funny joke and you laugh so hard you spit the toothpick out and it hits him in the face or something.”

Amid Images of Black Victims, Many Ask: Was Race a Factor?
by Martha Mendoza
New Orleans neighborhoods, once lined with old live oaks, charming cottages and imposing mansions, had been proof of the ease with which black and white could live side by side. With the exception, perhaps, of the toniest areas of St. Charles Avenue, and the poorest blocks of housing projects, black and white homeowners chatted to each other from their front porches and greeted each other as they walked their dogs down the streets. I see I’m not the only one who noticed that color seems to be making a difference in this. What has the world come to? Where is our humanity? Rhetorical questions as best. My heart goes out to these people. I will give what I can.
Peace. ~Paloma
Kanye West said a mouthful. I took some cajones to say it, but it needed to be said… bush may not “not care about Blacks”, but the retarded response of the federal government is truly telling…
I think Kanye West has a good point. Part of me wonders if it’s the color of the skin or the fact that they’re all poor. It’s not that Bush was thinking, “Oh, they’re black. We can slow down” but that maybe due to being in a certain demographic (whether that means particularly an ethnic, social/financial, political – or even religious – demographic) the appropriate communication channels are not being utilized.
I’m sure as heck not defending Bush (as I said before, if Discovery Channel was calling this disaster a year ago, the City/State/Federal government should’ve been more prepared), but it seems to me this particular disaster is a level that FEMA and cronies are unaccustomed to. They definitely should whip their butt into shape, but I wonder about how strong the ethnicity of the victims are directly influencing the problem.
And the movie is definitely: Empire Strikes Back.
Very good – ESB is right! You know your Star Wars flics.
THE MOVIE IS STAR WARS EMPIRE STRIKES BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ohhh man. Somebody got it already.
I have been trying to keep this tradgedy non political or racial .. but just to look around to seems all too obvious.
I have red eyes from so much TV coverge of this devastation.
I hope things are good with you. I am subbing to your site.
Peace and Love:)
DEFINITELY an ISSUE… RACE and POVERTY hand in hand. And I want to jump up and down shouting that while so many are ONLY debating who is responsible (or justifying their actions, trying to cover their butts) there is not enough discussion and brainstorming of WHAT WE CAN DO, what individuals can do, what communities can do – yes give donations, but also fundraisers, volunteering… I don’t know but linking together to take action that promotes life and well being.
Taking action in one’s own community also – mentoring a child, volunteering for local community efforts that are designed to address poverty and inequality. How many left behind were due to lack of resources to leave? No car, no bus ticket, etc. When the shit hits the fan, the poor and those excluded by society are left to eat the dust. They suffer most, they have the least resources to rely on, they have the least connections to assist them, they generate the least amount of press. Katrina is a deadon view of that truth. No one has any response sufficient to the truth of THAT.
Poverty is not a headline grabber. The comfortable will turn the channel – the difference here is we have the added graphics and devastation of Katrina to pique interest. My greatest fear is that the majority will soon lose interest and return to status quo, even myself… how long will I continue to be ACTIVELY concerned? to speak out, to give in every way I can?
I am asking myself all these questions… not a matter of finger pointing, or guilt… that is a waste of energy and it seldom results in changes of heart or motivation.
Kayne West spoke the difficult questions, he criticized and ALSO spoke about the ACTION he was taking personally to help and address the situation of those suffering in this tragedy. I hear too many only doing the first= only criticizing.
Loved the deep thought question! there will be a War on Toothpicks! And Homeland Security at the airport will not only request you to take your shoes and belt off, make you take a zip of the bottled water, check your luggage for explosives and fiddle around on you with rubbergloved hands. They will also make you open the mouth and say ‘AAAAh’ to check if you carry illegal toothpicks
I heard about that on Yahoo! news. I’m just shocked that everyone moved so quickly for tsunami victims yet it seems so slow to help our own people. It’s amazing.
Thank you KW! And thank you Lionne, for posting on these issues. You and I have discussed before, the problems of the poor, cutbacks on Sect 8-and a multitude of other things. Someone above said, this is a race and poverty issue in N.O.–plain and simple. Obviously bush cares more for the wealthy, as they are, and could be, his staunch supporters. He doesn’t give a damn about the poor and black of our nation. Toothpicks? How about giant toothpicks? :->
I don’t have anything to forgive Kanye West for. He was dead-on balls accurate. Bush only hugs black people on camera to get votes. It’s nice that he appointed Colin Powell secretary of state, but then he never listened to him. What’s up with that? The cabinet is supposed to be chosen for their advice-giving abilities. Well, maybe not anymore, but I think that was the original plan. As for Condi and Andrew and the rest, they’re still just token appointments, until proven otherwise.
I am sorry to have read that NBC censored what he said for the west coast feed.
Enjoy Labor Day!
