THURSDAY WHATEVER

Nicholas Berg – politicial prisoner, Iraq, beheaded
Margaret Hassan, political prisoner, Iraq, beheaded
Ghazi Allawi, first cousin of Iraqi Prime Minister, his wife and daughter-in-law, political prisoners, Iraq, all released within two weeks unharmed
What is missing in this picture?
(Not to be cryptic, but doesn’t anyone find it odd that statements are made loudly about not giving in to terrorists in order to save kidnap victims and then Allawi’s relatives are released almost immediately with no explanation as if, oops, we just didn’t realize who we had, sorry?)
Today I am grateful for: Cat’s whiskers

Bush in Halifax: Thousands March in Peaceful Opposition by Dan Arsenault and Barry Dorey
The fact thousands of protesters faced dozens of cops with not one person being arrested Wednesday had both sides calling Wednesday’s protests in downtown Halifax a big success.
“I couldn’t be happier,” said Tamara Lorincz of the Halifax Peace Coalition, main organizer of the rally. “Look at how many people came out on the streets because they care.”
She expected about 2,000 people would show their anger at American President George W. Bush’s presence in Halifax, but police estimate 4,000 people showed up. (Rest of article here.)
End of Day: 9:26 pm

WEDNESDAY MOVIES
City of God is set in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, in a housing project built in the 1960′s that in the early ’80′s became one of the most dangerous places to live. The narrator is a young black man growing up in poverty who manages to stay on the fringes of the violence around him and eventually finds his way to becoming a photographer. The environment he photographs and lives in is like a war zone – children of grade school age learn to rob, steal, and kill in gangs, growing into young men capable of ruling the slums they live in. It is a foreign film, the language being beautiful Brazilian Portuguese, but so worth dealing with subtitles.
